This is one of our most beautiful trees, unbeatable for many specimen situations. Leaves on this trifoliate maple are exquisite in form and color when emerging, as well as in their brilliant fall display. The Paperbark appreciates a lightly shaded site and regular moisture. Papery orange-brown bark peels to reveal a copper-colored trunk. The leaves are quite colorful in the fall with their deep wine red color. It is also extensively used for bonsai because its lacey bark is prominent even on small trees and because its leaves are smaller than most other maples. The Paperbark Maple is a spectacular tree, twenty to twenty-five feet tall, and has incredible year-round beauty. Paperbark Maple is also surprisingly easy to grow long term in containers or planters, and makes an excellent patio plant. You'll want to put this tree where it can be seen, touched, and admired. The Paperbark Maple can be grown in a large planter, as a specimen near a patio, or in a grove, widely spaced, with other exquisite maples. ![]() Ernest Wilson introduced it to Britain for the Veitch Nursery. It shouldn't be planted closer than 10 metres from another similar sized tree or 20 metres from potentially large trees. In Britain most specimens seldom exceed 8 metres tall but the tree can reach 15 metres in ideal growing conditions. It should where possible be viewed from the north side. It won't tolerate full sun all day long so it can be planted out at the end of a narrow vista or in a small open glade. In the horticultural landscape this is an eye-catcher at close or medium range. Much of the seed produced is pathenocarpic so germination levels are extremely low. Among the rich variety of cultivated maples, this one is highly esteemed for its peeling tissue-thin coppery bark. In the wild state paperbark maple is now endangered. In autumn a fine display of scarlet and deep red may be expected. New leaves unfold pale orange-brown and turn pinkish yellow before becoming green for the summer. In addition to its distinctive stem this trifoliate maple produces a range of seasonal foliage colours. But the quick lifecycle of an aphid progression from egg to adult is about a week means that its easy for a tree to have a large number of aphids at one time. ![]() Individual aphids cause little damage as they hatch and feed on leaves and bark. These are particularly stunning when back lit by the sun. Aphids are small, pear-shaped, fuzzy insects that can take hold in a paperbark maple tree. If left alone curling translucent sheets of paper thin bark eventually hang from the stems and branches. It's small in size and has cinnamon coloured peeling bark.
